Travel Health Information

Going travelling?

Whether travelling for business, adventure or relaxation, a good trip always involves careful planning.

Travel

It is important to protect your health while abroad, especially if spending time in areas that pose risk of certain diseases.  We would recommend that you start planning your travel health at least 3 months in advance.  It is possible that you may need travel vaccinations or malaria tablets.

Our practice nurses are fully trained to provide advice regarding immunisations for travelling abroad, malaria prophylaxis and general advice about keeping yourself healthy whilst travelling.

For information, advice and to be seen (if appropriate), please complete a Travel Risk Assessment Form below. Paper copies are also available at Reception.

After we have received your form, a Practice Nurse will be in touch with you, please allow at least 5 working days.

If you are travelling to an area where vaccinations are recommended, we ideally need to see you 6-8 weeks before you travel to allow for a course of vaccinations to be completed and for the vaccinations to take effect.

We can only offer travel advice and appointments to Pembroke Medical Group patients.

Some travel vaccinations are free on the NHS while others are chargeable.

You will be advised as part of your assessment which vaccines you need.

We can offer the free NHS vaccinations of Typhoid, Hepatitis A, DTP (Diphtheria/Tetanus/Polio) and the MMR.

If there are any non NHS funded (chargeable) vaccinations recommended, these can be arranged at Exeter travel clinic (01392 430590) or Boots, Wren Park, Torquay (01803 615874)

We do recommend that you visit the fit for travel website and you can download our general travel advice leaflet here

If you need to take medication whilst you are away, make sure you have ordered this from us in good time before you go. Please note that we can only give a maximum three month supply.

Health Insurance

This is often the very last items on a traveller’s checklist, yet it is perhaps the most important of all. Cover should be arranged at the time you book your holiday.

European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge. Applying for the card is free. However, other, unofficial, websites may charge you if you apply through them.
